How does Coday convert between currencies?

Updated

Turn on You → Settings → Currency → Multi-Currency and each item can have its own currency. Home totals are converted to your main currency one payment at a time, each at the rate on the day it happened: the purchase date for the price, the charge date for each renewal, and the restock or sale date for those. An item's own averages stay in its own currency. It's free and needs no sign-in.

Turn on multiple currencies

  1. On the You tab, tap Settings, then Currency.
  2. Turn on Multi-Currency. The Currency row becomes Main Currency: home totals and sorting convert to it, and new items use it by default.
  3. Below it are the latest exchange rates, with the currencies your items use at the top.

With it off there's just one currency, and the price box works as before.

Choose an item's currency

  • When you tap into the price box while adding an item, a row of currencies appears above the keyboard: your main currency and ones you've used recently. Tap one to switch, or tap "All currencies" if it isn't there.
  • You can also tap the currency symbol in front of the price box to open the full list.
  • Under the price of a foreign-currency item you'll see a line like "≈ $1,907 · at the Sep 21 rate", converted at the purchase-date rate, so a wrong currency stands out right away.
  • AI Capture reads the currency from the order and fills it in.

Why each payment uses its own day's rate

What money you spent was worth was settled on the day you paid. Say you bought a camera in Japan for ¥300,000 in 2021, about $2,750 at the time. If the yen later falls to 150 to the dollar, today's rate would call it $2,000, but you actually spent $2,750. So Coday doesn't multiply a total by today's rate; it converts each payment on its own day:

Payment Rate used
Price and additional costs Purchase date
Each subscription charge That charge's date
Restocks The day you restocked
Money from selling it The day you sold it, converted on its own and then taken off
The next charge that hasn't happened yet Latest rate

Converted amounts are worked out when they're shown and aren't stored, so switching your main currency doesn't rewrite any data. Totals show in the new currency straight away.

Where converted amounts show

  • Home stats card: total spent, total cost per day and the category chart are all in your main currency.
  • Sorting by total or average: foreign-currency cards show the converted amount, and the sort uses it.
  • Item page: a foreign-currency item gets an extra line like "≈ $2,750 · at the Mar 5, 2021 rate". If its money came in several payments, it says "At the rate on each payment date".
  • Home filters: when your items use more than one currency, you can filter by currency.

Changing a currency doesn't convert the numbers

  • Change an item from dollars to yen and the number stays the same; only the label changes. A note under the price says so, with Undo.
  • Changing your main currency only changes what totals are shown in. No item changes.
  • With Multi-Currency off, Currency is the currency of all your items: change it and every item switches to the new one, again without converting the numbers.
  • Turn Multi-Currency off and foreign-currency items you've logged are still converted into totals; when you edit one, its currency shows in front of the price.

When it can't convert

Rates need the internet, and the ones fetched are kept on your device. If there's no rate for a day (a weekend or holiday), the nearest day is used. Only a currency that has never had any rate fetched on your device can't be converted: that item is left out of totals for now, its page says "Can't convert right now", and it's added in once the rate arrives.

If you're signed in, the main currency and the Multi-Currency setting belong to your account and are the same on all your devices. Changing them needs the internet.
